The Benefits of Using Breathable Clay and Lime Plaster in Barn Conversions
One of the most striking parts of our recently completed Barn conversion in Herefordshire, is the clay plaster that was used on the internal walls and ceilings. With tripple height walls on show we were concerned that the space might feel bit flat and empty. However with the warmth of the material, and the variety of tones that you get with a natural plaster, the wall becomes a subtle part of the architecture. For this recent barn conversion we specified Luna Plaster’s Earth Plaster which is a 100% natural mix of clay, minerals and pigments and works well with the palette of other materials and original features.
Breathability
For barn conversions in particular, using breathable natural building materials such as Wood Fibre Insulation allow moisture to move freely through the existing stone walls, and avoids the risk of moisture becoming trapped within the wall build-up. Natural breathable insulation requires breathable finish to ensure the allow the moisture to move freely. Traditionally this would have been lime plaster, but recently a number of clay based plasters have become available that also offer a sustainable alternative to the commonly used Gypsum plaster.
Aesthetic Appeal
One of the most striking features of lime plaster is its beautiful tonal variation. This natural material comes in a range of soft, earthy colours, from warm creams to rich terracotta’s, allowing for a stunning finish that complements the rustic charm of barn conversions. The unique texture and depth created by lime plaster can enhance the character of your space, making each room feel inviting and warm.
Improved Air Quality
Breathable clay and lime plaster are not just visually appealing; they also contribute to a healthier indoor environment. These materials allow moisture to escape from walls, preventing damp and mould build-up. This moisture regulation helps maintain optimal humidity levels, which can improve air quality and overall comfort in your home.
Acoustic Benefits
Another significant advantage of using natural plaster is its acoustic properties. Both lime and clay plasters can help dampen sound, creating a quieter and more peaceful living environment. This is especially beneficial in barn conversions, where high ceilings and open spaces can sometimes lead to echoing. The use of natural plasters can enhance the acoustic comfort of your home, helping to creating a calm and healthy environment.
