Elevating Design: A Bespoke Metal Staircase in our Herefordshire barn conversion
In the world of architecture, the interplay between functionality and aesthetics can create truly stunning results. One of our recent projects, a significant barn conversion, showcases this balance beautifully with the installation of a bespoke metal staircase. This feature not only enhances the visual appeal of the space but also serves as a practical solution for connecting the upper and lower levels of this charming structure.
The Vision
The barn conversion presented a unique challenge: how to retain the rustic charm of the original building while integrating modern design elements that would breathe new life into the space. Our vision was to create a staircase that would be a focal point, drawing the eye without overwhelming the existing architecture.
Design Elements
The staircase is crafted from folded metal treads, elegantly powder-coated in black to provide a sleek and contemporary finish. This choice not only complements the barn’s historical character but also aligns with the modern aesthetic we aimed to achieve. The addition of oak tread inserts brings a warm, organic touch, creating a beautiful contrast against the industrial metal.
Light and Airy Feel
One of the standout features of the staircase is its balustrading. Designed to be thin and minimal, it offers safety without obstructing the flow of light. The openness of the balustrade allows daylight to flood into the space, illuminating both the staircase and the surrounding areas. This design decision was crucial in ensuring the barn retains a sense of airiness and lightness, essential in such a grand volume.
Structural Integrity
A staircase must not only be beautiful but also structurally sound. Our design integrates a concealed stringer fixed to a structural wall, which creates the illusion that the staircase is floating. This clever engineering solution not only maximizes floor space but also provides a sense of elegance, making the staircase appear almost weightless.

Local Craftsmanship
One of our guiding principles in this project was to support local artisans. The staircase was meticulously fabricated by Westside Fabrications, a talented team based just 10 miles from the barn. Their craftsmanship and attention to detail were vital in bringing our design to life, ensuring that every element was executed to perfection.
By utilizing quality materials, local craftsmanship, and innovative engineering solutions, we’ve created a feature that enhances both the functionality and beauty of the space.
As we continue to explore new ways to marry form and function in our architectural projects, this staircase stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when creativity and skill come together.
